ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
New Orleans is rich in musical history, being the birthplace of jazz and a true creative hotbed. The city evokes everything from the early days at Congo Square to Trombone Shorty and names of the caliber of Louis Armstrong, Allen Toussaint and Dr. John. Louisiana is a state characterized by a blend of cultural influences, and today is home to genres from soul to funk and bounce, all of which are closely linked to swing. A city with a human side (a far cry from the megalopolises of the east and west coasts), the Big Easy, as it is affectionately known by its inhabitants, frequently generates new talent; including Sullivan Fortner. Known for his collaborations with the late Roy Hargrove, the sublime Dee Dee Bridgewater, the legendary Gary Bartz and rock singer Paul Simon, this pianist is unsurprisingly recognized by the press. This is particularly thanks to some outstanding reviews in the popular magazine Downbeat. Here, Fortner takes to the stage of the Parisian club Sunside to deliver a captivating solo set, a performance in keeping with his double album Solo Game. The set touches on different periods of jazz, which he incorporates with a great deal of personality. Some of the melodies are clearly reminiscent of ragtime, other tracks evoke the dissonance of bop, and the whole performance undeniably recalls the inventiveness of 20th-century classical music. A true delight.
