Martial Solal is Breathless

Solal plays the music he wrote for Jean-Luc Godard famous movie Breathless (À bout de souffle)

Martial Solal, 91 years old at the time of recording, seems to have had a lot of fun on this album. He who had announced his retirement could not refuse the game proposal that was made to him: to randomly pick from 52 small pieces of paper the subject of an improvisation… Sitting at the piano, he introduces each improvisation with a short explanation.

Martial says: "the whole thing was recorded in one take, which may explain some repetitions and the sometimes unbridled or thoughtless side... I played the same way I would at home, in the morning, just to wander on the keyboard".
